Optimizing the design of function-valued materials properties such as the viscoelastic moduli of soft and polymeric materials is more difficult than optimizing scalar-valued materials properties due to the increased dimensionality. Here, we begin to address this challenge using a system of bio-inspired hydrogels crosslinked with metal-coordinate complexes. We show how the viscoelastic properties can be tuned dramatically by altering the crosslink structure in a straightforward manner, and further we extend our materials such that we can modify their viscoelastic material functions by longwave UV light.
